The engineering service of AO "Motovi-likhinskiye zavody" counts its beginning since the thirtieth years of 20 century. A forefather of an engineering service is a bureau of the standard drafts created for technological improvement of manufacturing process and issue of the working documentation on products of an artillery structure.

Characteristics of the documentation of those years was its low technical quality, that essentially complicated process of serial manufacture of products. The interchangeability of assemblies and mechanisms was not guaranteed. Many components were made in unique copy for each product, required manual finishing at serial assembly. The efforts of the enterprise's engineering service sharply reduced expenditures of machine and manual time at manufacturing of artillery systems, for a number of forgins were developed the technologies of transfer on punching or steel moulding, the design and technology of manufacturing of compound was simplified, the interchangeability of assemblies and details was increased.

Other direction of work of the enterprise's engineering service of those years was adoptation or development of western technologies' substitutes of artillery systems' production in the Soviet industry.

First of all it was connected with the necessity of restoration of a material part for various artillery systems, damaged during world and civil war, as for example, 152 mm and 203 mm English howitzer of "Vickers" company, and also organization of serial manufacture of guns under the ready drafts, acting from Germany.

Experience of mastering of "alien" technologies, accumulated by the engineering service in the 30th years has played a positive role during the Great Patriotic war, when the Perm enterprise was compelled to invent manufactures of products of the evacuated factories, and also to develop substitutes of manufactures lost in connection with fascists occupation of USSR's western part.

Besides, the established rigid condition of means' economy served as a stimulus for the Motovilikha's engineers in search of cheaper technologies for manufacturing of products, increase of automation and unification of processes, decrease of labour intensiveness.

In the afterwar period the tendencies of the further perfection serial production and creation of new defence products were kept at the Perm enterprise.

The range of manufactured equipment was extending also. Besides the traditional for Motovilikha artillery systems, self-propelled guns and mortars, the rocket equipment, multiple launch rocket systems, anti-aircraft complexes has appeared.

In conditions of multinomenclature manufacture essentially has increased the load on engineering divisions, which task included development and extending of subjectional-technological specialization, increase of a organizational-technological level of manufacture.

The engineering staff of the plant carried out the important measures on constructive-technological improvement of products, development of unification, increase of application and standardization parameters.

On this basis the development of typical processes and line-group technologies, application of progressive semi-finished products, initial materials, new methods of form-building was carried out.

In parallel with the specified work the engineering service carried out technical re-equipment of productions at the expense of creation of the modern high-efficiency equipment: special, modular machine tools and CNC machine tools.

In artillery production was completely replaced out-of-date import and trophy special equipment of more than 60 foreign companies.

More than 120 modifications of machine tools, developed and manufactured by home machine plants have come on replacement.

The style and form of work organization on engineering maintenance of productions, their integration on a basis of jointly solved tasks on development of technical progress, strengthening of normative base, increase of work efficiency were constantly improved.

The engineering-technological base, generated in that period, culture of manufacture, was the provided determinant of stable work of AO "Motovilikhinskiye zavody" within reorganization of the Russian economy.
