SPECIAL DESIGN BUREAU

Perm Tzar-gunThe history of a special design bureau OAO "MZ" begins in 1924 with creation of collective of the designers - planners for modernization of regular Russian and foreign artillery systems, and also creation of new guns on the base of a technical bureau of the "Perm gun plants". Before the specified time the Perm enterprise, basically made design support for produced at that time by a factory guns, howitzers, mortars of "Shneyder" company, Putilovskiy factory, and also other systems.

Despite of stagnation and depression in the Soviet industry testing a consequences of civil war, the not numerous collective of the designers of a technical bureau has shown the highly effective work, less than for 7 years successfully having realized 6 projects of artillery systems' modernization of the Russian and foreign manufacture, and also having developed 3 new artillery systems:

  • 122-mm a case gun, model of 1931;
  • 76-mm a field gun, model of 1933 (F19);
  • 152-mm a gun, model of 1931/1934.

76-mm field gun, model of 1933The next impulse in its development the technical bureau of the enterprise has received in 1935, when its reorganization was made and was formed the united test - design bureau (TDB) with concentration of the experts engaged only in military development in its structure. At the same time the test - experimental base was created which essentially has sped up works on manufacturing of guns' new samples.

The updated collective of TDB during subsequent years before war has developed and has directed to serial manufacture 5 new artillery systems:

  • 152-mm case gun - howitzer, model of 1937 (ML-20);
  • 122-mm division howitzer, model of 1938 (M30);
  • 152-mm division howitzer, model of 1938 (M10);
  • 107-mm gun, model of 1939 (M60);
  • 45-mm sea anti-aircraft gun (M13).

45-mm anti-tank gun, model of 1942In the days of Great Patriotic war all efforts were concentrated on a considerable of output of serial machines, on development of other types of artillery armament, the engineering specifications and equipment for their manufacturing were evacuated in Perm from front territories, and also for the development of substitutes of details and assemblies of artillery equipment, whose manufactures were left in the territory, seized by the fascists.

For the period from 1941 to 1945 at the Perm enterprise 8 artillery systems were mastered in serial manufacture:

  • 76-mm regiment gun, model of 1927;
  • 76-mm regiment gun, model of 1943 (OB-25);
  • 45-mm anti-tank gun, model of 1937;
  • 45-mm anti-tank gun, model of 1942(M-42);
  • 25-mm anti-aircraft gun 72-K;
  • 45-mm sea anti-aircraft gun M13;
  • 122-mm self-propelled gun A19S;
  • 152-mm self-propelled gun ML-20S.

Despite of work-load of test - experimental base by the manufacturing of serial products, in military time factory made more than 40 test samples of artillery systems under the drafts of TDB and drafts of other organizations . The part from them was adopted.

The designers worked day and night, not leaving factory for some days. It became usual that term of realization of the new design project was reduced to months and weeks. So, at manufacturing of 152-mm self-propelled gun ML-20S, the work on output of the drawings, manufacturing, assembly and test of a test sample was carried out in unprecedented short even at that time term - only for 10 days.

After war, taking into account the increased importance and conducting role in the field of artillery systems' development of middle and large calibres in 1946 the test-design bureau was reorganized in a Special design bureau (SDB-172).

130-mm army gun M-46On the basis of battle experience and upcoming requirements of army, SDB has developed works on creation of new artillery systems. In after war period was developed more 20 test samples of artillery and ballistic launchers. Were added to Soviet army's armory:

  • 130-mm army gun M46;
  • 152-mm army gun M47;
  • 122-mm tank gun M62-T;
  • 76-mm mountainpack gun M99.

During 1956-1966 the direction of works of the design bureau has changed sharply. On a basis SDB-172 and its experimental base the new organization - Design bureau of machine-building (KBMash) was created which began to develop rocket engines.

At this period there was a development of new engineering's manufacture at the factory , such as rockets 8K63, 8K63u, 11K63, launchers 5P73, SM-63, SM-90M, TZM PR14-AM, the artificial Earth satellites of the series "Space", 122-mm MLRS "GRAD" (BM-21) and other equipment, in which actively participated designers of a serial department SDB.

The design artillery works have renewed in 1966, when by order of the Minister of defence industry a Special design bureau with test - design department was organized , to which the creation of the newest samples of artillery systems for land and airborne forces, and also fighting (FV) and transport - loading vehicles (TLV) of multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) was entrusted.

120-mm towed artillery gun "Nona-K"From that time more than 20 artillery systems of various purpose are developed, from them are adopted:

  • 152-mm towed gun 2A36 "Giatsint-B";
  • 152-mm self-propelled gun "Giatsint-S" with a gun 2A37;
  • 240-mm self-propelled mortar 2S4 "Tulpan" with artillery piece 2B8;
  • 120-mm self-propelled gun 2S9 "Nona-S";
  • 120-mm the self-propelled gun 2S23 "Nona-SVK";
  • 120-mm the towed gun 2B16 "Nona-K".

Multiple launch rocket systems consisting from fighting and transport-loading vehicles:

  • 220-mm MLRS "Uragan" with FV 9P140 and TLV 9A452;
  • 300-mm MLRS "Smerch" with FV 9A52 and TLV 9A432;
  • Heavy flame-thrower system TOS-1 "Buratino".

300-mm Multiple Launch Rocket System "Smerch"High scientific-technical level of the above-stated developments is confirmed by that almost all these products are awarded to State premiums, and MLRS "Smerch" - to Lenin premium.

At different years the known experts - chief designers and chiefs of test DB: V.N. Sidorenko, A.N. Bulyishev, F.F. Petrov, S.P. Gurenko, M.U. Tsirulnikov, U.N. Kalachnikov and present general designer of the factory - S.V. Grunin had contributed heavily to designing and creation of new artillery systems at the factory.

For the past period in SDB more than 170 research and test - design works are executed, 400 copyright certificates and patents for the inventions are received, more than 9 employees are awarded to Lenin and State premiums for creation of artillery systems and MLRS, about 70 workers are awarded with awards and medals of USSR and Russia.

General Designer S.V. GruninAt present, despite of difficult conditions at the enterprises of the Russian defence industrial complex and reduction of the state defence order, designers of SDB is kept their historical traditions, developing priority systems of rocket and artillery, and also carring out "profound" modernization of previously manufactured armament.

In connection with above-stated SDB offers to the potential customers:

  • Realization of joint works on modernization of rocket-artillery systems of Soviet / Russian, and also foreign manufacture.
  • Realization of joint SRW, SRTDW, TDW in the field of creation and perfection of rocket-artillery and mortar armament.
  • Creation of assemblies, components, systems of battle equipment in the interests of the customer .
