In 1967 there was made a decision to develop self-propelled howitzer 2S3 "Akatsiya". It was intended to liquidate backlog from foreign self-propelled artillery.

The beginning of work on SPH "Akatsiya" was preceded by com-parative analytical study of the artillery pieces created during the war (SU-100, SU-152), and artillery systems of the postwar generation. As a result, the concept of perspective development of self-propelled artillery was chosen.

The artillery part 2A33 was made on OAO "Motovilikhinskiye zavody".
